The Mighty Gut

This animation combines 2D and 3D media to educate a high-school level audience about the relationship between the gut microbiota and intestinal health.

Research, Scripting, and Concepts

The relationship between the gut microbiota and gut health can become complicated to explain for a high-school audience. For this project, I chose to focus on general ideas related to the topic of dysbiosis and its impact on the mucosal layer of the intestines.

After collecting enough supporting information, I created a script, and began thinking of the imagery I want to go with each portion of the script.

Storyboarding

After considering what my scenes might look like, I began drafting up sketches of how the animation might unfold–a process known as storyboarding. At this stage, I also started thinking of color palette and style choices.

Animatic

An animatic was created using after effects. In addition to testing timing, I also used this as an opportunity to test a possible color palette. I created a cuts list (seen on the right) prior to 3D production in Cinema4D,  to guide the production process.

Production

While 2D assets were created in ClipStudio paint, 3D assets were created in Cinema4D. Assets were clipped together and animated using After Effects.
